Karabakh peace a ‘priority for Obama’
The US envoy in Baku has responded to an appeal to President Obama about Nagorno-Karabakh from more than 1,000 Azerbaijani women.
At the initiative of the Karabakh Liberation Organization’s women’s council, the appeal was sent to the UN secretary general and the presidents of France, Russia and the USA. Those three countries co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body mediating a solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Read the rest of this entry »

Karabakh Airport built with Turkish machinery
Turkey’s Demirci Makina has provided metal raw materials for the ongoing construction of a Nagorno-Karabakh airport, according to Dmitri Atbashian, the president of Armenia’s national airliner, Demirci has no direct sales to both Nagorno-Karabakh or Armenia, says the head of the Turkish company
The machinery used in shaping metal components at a newly constructed airport in the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh were manufactured by an Ankara-based firm that has denied making any direct sales to either Armenia or Karabakh. Read the rest of this entry »

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ‘self-deception,’ says Armenian peace activist
The head of the Yerevan-based Caucasus Center of Peace-Making Initiatives, or CCPMI, argued in a recent interview that both Azerbaijan and Armenia are involved in “self deception” regarding the conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
In an interview with the Azerbaijani online news outlet News.az earlier this week, Georgi Vanian, said the conflict stage of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia has given way to a self-deceptive, persecution-complex style ideology that perpetuates tension. Read the rest of this entry »

Armenian journalist dissects Karabakh in new book
Though Armenian-Azerbaijani relations have attracted much scholarly and journalistic attention, one Armenian journalist and author, Tatul Hagopian, believes his new book presents an original approach to understanding and analyzing the drama.
“Gananç u Sev – Arzakhyan Orakir” (Green and Black – Artsakh Diary) focuses on the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region and is the result of Hagopian’s 20-year investigation of the region and is based on countless historical documents, eyewitness accounts and personal observations. Karabakh Peace Process Must Be Fully Inclusive
The dispute over the Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh has festered for more than two decades. One of the keys to finding a peaceful resolution of the conflict is achieving the normalization of relations between the region’s ethnic Armenian and Azeri communities.
In 1992, a mission of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE, precursor to the OSCE) headed by then-U.S. Secretary of State James Baker worked out the so-called Baker Rules, which were agreed to by all sides in the conflict. Those rules recognized the two communities of Nagorno-Karabakh as “interested parties,” and Armenia and Azerbaijan as “principal parties.” Read the rest of this entry »

US hails Karabakh peace talks as ‘breakthrough’
Ahead of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents’ key meeting in Russia, US mediator of the Minsk Group Matt Bryza tells the Daily News that the strengthening dialogue has brought mediation efforts to a ‘new and hopeful level’ and welcomes Moscow’s contributions
The United States has welcomed the progress in the peace process between regional rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan concerning the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory.
“There is a real breakthrough in negotiations,” said Matt Bryza, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. The U.S. official on Monday attended the European Union’s flagship Nabucco natural gas pipeline project signing ceremony in Ankara, where he spoke to the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.
