Leaders fail to make headway on Karabakh
Azerbaijan and Armenia failed to come to an agreement on the path to peace in Nagorno Karabakh after a meeting of their leaders in Russia on Friday, but said some progress had been made, Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan in the Volga city of Kazan, for another round of talks seeking to end the two-decade conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. Read the rest of this entry »

Azerbaijani minister meets US mediator, analysts
Elmar Mammadyarov has discussed settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Karabakh with US mediator Robert Bradtke.
They met in Washington on 1 June during Elmar Mammadyarov’s working visit to the USA, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported.
Robert Bradtke is one of three co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, alongside French and Russian diplomats, which is mediating a settlement to the Karabakh conflict. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas House of Representatives commemorates Khojaly massacre
The House of Representatives of the State of Texas has passed a resolution commemorating the Khojaly massacre.

Karabakh peace conditional on ‘overthrow of Armenian regime’
An Azerbaijani official has said that progress cannot be made on a Karabakh peace deal until the “fascist regime in Armenia is overthrown”.
Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov, who is also chairman of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Refugees and Displaced Persons, made the comments on Friday during discussions of a book by the head of the Presidential Administration, Academician Ramiz Mehdiyev, “Goris 2010: Theater of the Absurd”. Azerbaijani farmers come under Armenian fire
Azerbaijani civilians working in fields near the front line have come under automatic and machine-gun fire from Armenian positions.
The incident occurred near Chiragli in Agdam District in southwest Azerbaijan, APA reported.

Russian, US, French leaders call for Karabakh peace
The presidents of Russia, France and the USA have issued a statement on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The three countries co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body seeking a settlement to the conflict.

EU concerned at Karabakh tension
The European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council has discussed regional stability and conflict resolution in the South Caucasus.
“The Council held an exchange of views on the current situation in the South Caucasus and a possible EU role in the region,” according to a preliminary report on the meeting published by the EU.

Several Armenian soldiers dead in military ’incident’
Up to six Armenian soldiers have died in a shooting incident in the disputed Azerbaijani enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, a human-rights activist and news media said Friday.
Officials refused to confirm the number of dead, but Armenia’s defense ministry issued a statement Thursday saying that an “incident” in the military involving “use of firearms” had resulted in an unspecified number of deaths.
Human-rights activist Artur Sakunts told Agence France-Presse that, according to his sources, an Armenian soldier had killed five fellow servicemen in Karabakh on Wednesday. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Turkey is right in demanding the end to occupation in Karabakh
In order to continue the “normalization” of Turkey-Armenia relations, it has become the major stipulation to bring the protocols signed in Zurich, Oct. 10, onto the agenda of the two parliaments.
There are reports that in the meetings held in Washington on April 12-13, Prime Minister Recep Erdoğan faced pressures to immediately bring the Zurich protocols onto the agenda of the Turkish Parliament. Some media outlets in the West and Turkey have strongly criticized Erdoğan for linking the “normalization” of Turkey-Armenia relations to the stipulation “to release Karabakh from occupation” and thus, “blocking up” the way of the process. While assessing from several aspects the stipulation “to release Karabakh from occupation” in the process of the “normalization” of Turkey-Armenia relations, we see that Prime Minister Erdoğan’s statement in the Azerbaijani parliament on May 13, 2009, is in line with the principles of the international law and human rights.
