Over three million square meters of land cleared of mines in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan’s National Agency for Mine Action, ANAMA, cleared 3,035,564 square meters of land from mines in July, Azerbaijan’s News.Az website reported Thursday.
A total of 3,987 unexploded shells, including 24 anti-tank mines and four anti-infantry mines, were found and neutralized in July, ANAMA’s press service reported.
The operations involved 425 specialists and 115 assistants, six mine-clearing vehicles and 30 specially trained dogs.
In 10 years, ANAMA has cleared 138,462,505 square metres of land, disabling 621,964 mines and munitions.
Mine clearance work is continuing in Fizuli, Terter, or Tartar, Agdam, Agstafa and Gadabay regions and Baka’s Garadag settlement.
ANAMA has started to clear unexploded munitions from the territory of a juice factory in Beylagan District. Until 1994 the factory was used as a munitions store. An explosion at the factory scattered ammunition over the surrounding area.
The mines were laid during the Armenian-Azerbaijani war over Nagorno-Karabakh. A cease-fire was declared in 1994.
