Nabucco not to pass through Armenia-Azeri official

Hurriyet

It is impossible for the Nabucco pipeline, which is planned to transfer natural gas from Azerbaijan and Central Asia to Europe, to pass through Armenia, an Azerbaijani news agency quoted an official as saying.

The route of the planned pipeline has already been determined, Ali Hasanov, the head of the Public Policy Department of the President’s office, was quoted by APA as saying.

“The Azerbaijani government has not received any proposal on changing the Nabucco gas pipeline project”, he said, referring to the reports, which claimed the Nabucco pipeline would pass within Armenia’s borders.

The The 3,300-kilometer pipeline is due to bring 30 billion cubic metres of Caspian or Middle Eastern gas annually from Turkey to an Austrian gas hub via Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2009, with the completion date set for 2013. The shareholders in Nabucco include OMV of Austria, MOL of Hungary, Transgaz of Romania, Bulgargaz of Bulgaria, BOTAS of Turkey and RWE of Germany. The project is backed by the EU and the United States.

“Azerbaijan has stated on a many occasions that it would not cooperate with Armenia before the returning of territories occupied by Armenia, the restoration of Azerbaijan’s sovereign rights over these territories and the establishment peace in the South Caucasus,” Hasanov also said.

The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia began in 1988 due to Armenian territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Since 1992, Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and its seven surrounding districts. Some 10 percent of the Azeri population was displaced due to a series of bloody clashes both between and within the two neighboring countries.

In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement at which time the active hostilities ended. The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group are currently holding peaceful negotiations.
